I’m so excited that I was chosen for this pose book! This is my first major publication! I received an email from Denim + Grace about two weeks ago. I got as far as “Congratulations!” And, I started screaming. Kept screaming. Made a few victory laps around the house, until one of my housemates asked what was going on. Although, I’m sure she asked so that I would silence myself more than anything else.
Denim + Grace chose my new born photo of the darling Zia. Little Zia was photographed at 10 days old and she is already famous. Maybe if I continue to photograph her, she will bring me more publications! 😉
If you would like to get your own copy, shuffle on over to this link.
The image below shows the list of contributing artists. I’m second on the list, so it’s not too hard to find!
I’m on the bottom left of the page below! Well, I mean, Zia is on the bottom left!
I can’t blame them for picking her. She’s too darn cute to be turned away!
Whitman has a small quarterly publication called Quarterlife. Quarterlife’s last submission theme was “Other People’s Bathrooms.” I was very excited to submit some of my work, but I had no idea how to use the theme. I thought to myself, “What do I do with that? Do a photo shoot in the bathroom?” After a bit of contemplation, that is exactly what I did.
My friends Angela and Kari were onboard with the idea as soon as I presented it to them. I came up with the idea only a few days before spring break, and I really wanted to do the shoot while I had the momentum, opposed to waiting 2 or 3 weeks to get around to it. I just get so excited and I want everything to happen at the rate the ideas are pouring out of my brain. As I have realized, it doesn’t quite work that way.
We did this shoot bright and early at 8am! So, we had to work around our sleepily-confused housemates trickling in to wash their faces and brush their teeth. We played super loud music, pretended like we were super models, and filled the bathtub full of bubbles. It’s always a surprise to me how much fun we have making these things happen. I think the biggest way I have been able to grow is by saying “yes” to my crazy ideas and making them come true.
I love ballerinas! I took some ballet classes when I was younger, but I never stuck with it. In class I always imagined how graceful I was, but I quickly learned my elegance was merely an illusion. And that makes me admire the dedication and determination it takes to become a ballerina even more. The hours and hours a week it takes to get better and all the blisters that come with it!
I just love being around passionate people, people who know what they want and won’t let anything get in the way of their goals. It’s contagious! Romey is definitely passionate about preforming, and it is very evident she is a natural. This young lady was freezing to death because it started snowing outside! But, that didn’t scare her at all, and she hung in there like a champ! It seems to be an on going theme in my work. People outside freezing for the sake of some pretty pictures! I’m just glad they put up with me!
This little lady was 11 days old when we did this shoot. Her mother, Zoey, thought that she would be asleep at that time because she had been for the few days prior to it. But, no. She was wide awake! The heat was up in the room to keep her warm and sleepy, we were all sweating to death. I got such a work out! I took these photos in Josh and Zoey’s home and I was jumping up to take photos and then oh-so elegantly flopping down to hit the ground and get a different angle. There was only a matter of seconds between her out burst to tears. I, like many other people my age — especially men– I have not given birth to a child. So we had no idea what she wanted! We tried rocking her, shh-ing her, feeding her. Nothing seemed to work. All I could think about “Poor little girl! This must be so weird!” And to top it off, when I was done taking photos… She fell asleep. I definitely learned a lot, and we still got some good photos!
Here is the full set of images from Loretta and Dakota! They won the holiday giveaway back in December! They were absolutely wonderful to take photos of, and it was so nice to see them interact and have fun with each other. I definitely went outside my photographer bubble to get these locations. Loretta had a lot of good ideas about where to take photos which was a nice to challenge to see what I could come up with. It was also pretty freezing outside, so an indoor location was nice! In the end (after I asked for permission) we ended up taking photos at Charles Smith Winery and the Chocolate Shop Tasting Room. I’ve always loved interior design and this gave me the opportunity to interact with it in my photos! As you may have noticed, I do primarily outdoor photography. But I can’t complain when you have amazing places like these.
The current giveaway I have is called the Beautiful You Giveaway and I am trying to help promote positive body image for women! If you would like to enter the current giveaway, see this link.
This is my beautiful little sister Rachael. We still have our disagreements. We don’t see eye to eye on everything. But, this woman has grown to be one of the strongest people I know. She surprises me with her love for others when it is least expected. I am proud to call you my sister! 🙂
